African leaders officially launched a historic free trade deal on May 30th, creating what they hope will be the world's largest free trade area. African nations launched the "operational phase" of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), a landmark free trade accord at the African Union (AU) Summit in Nigeria on Sunday July 7th, with nations agreeing on "rules of origin, the monitoring and elimination of non-tariff barriers, a unified digital payments system and an African trade observatory dashboard". Essentially with a focus to largely cutting tariffs between African countries, estimates are that the new agreement will lead to a 60% boost in intra-African trade by 2022. 54 of the African Union’s 55 members have now formally signed the agreement – Eritrea is the only AU member which has yet to join, but the country has made it known that it intends to do so in the near future. Phase 1 of AfCFTA will become operational from 1 July 2020, giving countries time to adapt to the necessary changes. Thereafter countries will still have a period of up to five years to meet the stated agreement requirements.
